RNIB React Talking Signs

MK Design have been working closely with the RNIB React Talking Sign Product. We provide demonstrations, surveys and project management for the system.

Introduction

RNIB React UnitThe RNIB REACT is an active audio sign system developed for the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind) that is installed in public areas, providing way-finding and other important information on and within buildings, on city streets, in trains and at bus stations. Although intended primarily for the visually impaired, the capabilities are such that the general public can also benefit. Companies and organisations can help provide a larger network for REACT whilst enlarging their customer support network and DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance. The REACT unit is installed on walls of buildings, on lampposts and in places where audio messages can assist the visually impaired to locate specific areas of a town or transport information. For example, it can give the street names adjacent to the unit and other useful local access information. This information enables blind and partially sighted people get around more safely, independently and with increased confidence. A radio frequency FOB – a device similar to a car key fob - which is carried by a visually impaired person, activates the REACT unit when they approach the unit within a pre-determined range. This triggers an appropriate audio message. The FOBs are supplied by the RNIB to organisations such as local Councils, visually impaired social groups and to individual companies who install units.

The RNIB REACT Unit

The REACT unit is housed in an aesthetic, highimpact plastic, fire-retardant and easy-to-install enclosure. Because the unit is completely sealed, it can withstand harsh external environments but due to its high quality finish, it will also blend into
interior settings very successfully. Unique speaker technology produces sound over the entire REACT enclosure surface, eliminating the need for speaker grilles and providing excellent vandal-resistant properties. High quality audio messages are
stored and relayed when the unit is activated.

• Audio messages can be provided in up to 4 different languages.
• Each language can have a secondary audio message providing more detailed information where required.
• Audio messages can be easily updated.
